Crime Pays for Corporate Partners

July 10, 2014 – Cleveland, OH – While Cleveland is trying to shake off the past as a crime ridden city, TV shows like the original Law & Order generated 3,000 acting jobs a year and $79 million in economic activity in the city each season it aired. Prelude2Cinema wants to show Northeast Ohio that “Crime Pays.” Founded by Emmy winning writer and award winning filmmaker Alex P. Michaels, Prelude2Cinema is launching a new series of crime dramas. Prelude2Cinema is seeking Corporate Partners, Interns, Cast and Crew before cameras start to roll August 15, 2014.

Michaels does wear a lot of hats as Studio Chief for Prelude2Cinema. He is an actor, writer, producer and a director. Yet, no man is an island. Story outlines for one of the dramas “de la Oscuridad” (Spanish for “of the Darkness”) was written by Jaime Sara Rotsky, a student at Beachwood School who has studied at the New York Film Academy and Playhouse Square. Bowling Green Student and filmmaker Michael Stafford is drawing storyboards and will act as Assistant Director. Assisting Michaels with the business details of the company is CSU  psychology student Julie Marie Fruscella and CSU grad Matthew Parnell, who is tasked with bringing more interns aboard the Company.

The goal of the Crime Dramas is showcase local actors, but Michaels is in touch with “name” Hollywood actors for leading and guest roles. Prelude2Cinema is bringing aboard Corporate Partners to fund the series. Businesses will be local, national and international. Each Corporate Partner will be written into one or more of the crime dramas.

This is not a new ideal for Prelude2Cinema, who created the original crime/sci-fi drama “Out of Darkness” a few years ago with support from Northeast Ohio businesses including bakery Lucy’s Sweet Surrender, Massimo da Milano and the Velvet Dog. A key scene was shot in the Bratenahl Police Jail. “Out of Darkness” aired nationally on Dish, in Cleveland, Ohio on Time Warner Cable and is now making the rounds internationally.

Audiences who watch the crime dramas may not understand the stories without watching it more than once. Michaels stories have the feel of old style film noir and European filmmakers like Godard and Truffaut. While Prelude2Cinema play to a national and international audience, Prelude2Cinema is committed to filming in Northeast Ohio. “de la Oscuridad” will be shot in English, but feature Latino characters and some Spanish language which should appeal to the growing Hispanic market.

Prelude2Cinema will use branded entertainment to fund the series. Branded entertainment is a form of product placement where a business is written into a movie or TV Series. Michaels says it is important to bring sponsors aboard before we start shooting so we can fit them into the first series in a realistic manner. Because “de la Oscuridad” being a cop series, it is easy to write any business into the story which is about sex, crime and politics. The first season will be six episodes and feature a storyline about a Task Force, who is given ultimate power to “keep the city safe.” The other shows “AP 16:16” and “And the Verdict Is” take place in the same universe as “de la Oscuridad,” so characters and stories will overlap.

A lot has changed in Television since Prelude2Cinema aired the series “Out of Darkness.” Netflix has changed the landscape of television forever. According to Neil Hunt, Netflix’s chief product officer, the death of the 30 second commercial will come very soon. Prelude2Cinema agrees and by incorporating Corporate Partners in the new Crime Dramas, the businesses will always be part of the story. Prelude2Cinema is also planning an interactive element to each series to keep the audience involved after the show ends. Prelude2Cinema company’s slogan is “Subtle, Honest Entertaining Advertisement.” Businesses interested in being Corporate Partners can contact Studio Chief Alex P. Michaels at alexmichaels@prelude2cinema.com or visitwww.prelude2cinema.com for more info.

A Dream of a Movie Studio

Cleveland, OH – August 28, 2013 – Cleveland filmmaker Alex P. Michaels won an Emmy because of a contest called the Dreambuilder’s Celebration. It was Martin Luther King’s speech that gave Producer/Director Jim Friedman the idea to create a program to help African American writers.

Now on the 50th anniversary of the celebrated “I have a dream speech,” Michaels is launching a crowdfunding campaign to create the first dedicated movie studio and business incubator in Northeast Ohio.

It has not been easy keeping the dream alive. Michaels invested a lot of his own money and gained investors to create his own production company Prelude2Cinema. Over the years, Prelude2Cinema has created movies, web series and a television series funded by local businesses including Lucy’s Sweet Surrender, Massimo da Milano and The Velvet Dog. While Prelude2Cinema’s movies have shown all over the world, the company has remained in Cleveland Ohio.

Instead of launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund the studio, Michaels is using Donald Trump’s new crowdfunding site Fund Anything. Michaels believes stars like Spike Lee and Zach Braff have turned Kickstarter into a celebrity haven for their projects. “You can’t spell Kickstarter without Star,” he says. ” Once Sylvester Stallone launched a project, we knew it was all over for indie projects. We like Trump’s site cause some projects will actually receive backing from the Donald himself.”

“It was tough for a lot of years, being a Cleveland filmmaker,” says Michaels. ” Anytime you mentioned you wanted to do movies, people said you had to leave Cleveland for Hollywood or no one would take you seriously. Now with Hollywood movies like “Captain America” and stars like Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner shooting in Cleveland, people’s minds have changed. This is definitely the time to launch a studio.”

In addition to working on movies, Michaels has learned a lot of business skills and studied local business incubators like Launchhouse. Which is why Prelude2Cinema’s studio will be a business incubator as well as a production studio that will foster local filmmakers and provide a soundstage to incoming Hollywood productions.

While the city does cater to Hollywood productions, the local filmmakers still receive little to no support. Michaels hopes Prelude2Cinema’s studio and business incubator will change that. He has gathered a team of professionals to assist him.

A dedicated movie studio in Cleveland, Ohio is the Holy Grail to making the region a true part of the multi-billion dollar movie and TV industry. Instead of waiting for Hollywood to come shoot here, we would be producing a steady stream of our own productions. A studio would provides jobs and that is something Cleveland desperately needs. Michaels believes it is not enough to wait for Hollywood to come in and save us. We have to save ourselves. We have to support our dreams.

January 2013 Production Date

Been talking to sponsors about coming aboard, so it is important they have something to sponsor. So I have decided that January 2013, Prelude2Cinema will move into production. It has been an interesting year and such with laying the groundwork for things. We are working out of Shaker LaunchHouse, a great business incubator. It is a good opportunity to get out of the house and meet other entrepreneurs.

Also good things have been happening. We won a Toshiba Laptop as part of a contest sponsored by COSE. Ironically, I had just bought a new laptop to work with at LaunchHouse.

Prelude2Cinema will be focusing on web series for right now since it is within our production means. Although some talented writers have been sending me scripts.

I think the goal is to stick close to the production date and it will be good to be back in production again. More news on what we are shooting will follow soon and photos from the productions.

Prelude2Cinema Branding a New Web Series

Most businesses try to reach customers using the 30 second commercial, but with DVRs, Video on Demand and the Internet being a growing choice for watching programs, a lot of 30 second spots never reach their audience. Movie & Marketing Company Prelude2Cinema LLC has planned a creative way to help businesses reach customers. Prelude2Cinema is using “Branded Entertainment” a form of product placement where the product or business is creatively written into the storyline to fund a new web series titled “Prelude2Cinema Presents…”

Although, placing businesses in a dramatic production is a tricky thing. Done incorrectly, it interrupts the story and irritates the audience. The business has to come in early in the production and allow the producer creative control. In return, the producer has to respect the business and give it exposure without disrupting the story.

This isn’t the first time Prelude2Cinema has used Branded Entertainment to fund a production. Prelude2Cinema was founded by Emmy winning writer Alex P. Michaels. A few years ago, Prelude2Cinema created a half hour cop/sci-fi drama named “Out of Darkness.” The series aired nationally on Dish Network and in Cleveland on Time Warner Cable. Local sponsors included bakery Lucy’s Sweet Surrender, Italian restaurant Massimo da Milano, night club The Velvet Dog and other businesses. A few scenes were shot in the Bratenahl Jail. Only a few episodes were shot. More episodes were planned but it became too costly to continue production.

Prelude2Cinema based its’ decision to do a web series instead of another TV series not only on cost, but also on the recognition of “The Web Series” as a form of entertainment. Hollywood talent like Tom Hanks and Anthony Zuiker, the creator of TV’s hugely successful CSI franchise are using web series to reach new audiences. While Hollywood web series have larger budgets, it is possible for indie producers to create short quality work.

“Prelude2Cinema Presents…” will be an anthology series composed of different genres. Scripts are being written by Michaels, staff writer Cindii Eggers and others. Michaels says “Characters from “Out of Darkness” will appear in some episodes, but the web series will be a way to try out new characters and storylines. We hope to have something that will appeal to every type of business.”

“Prelude2Cinema Presents…” will be aired online as 3 to 5 minute episodes, then packaged as 30 min shows and sold to networks. “Prelude2Cinema Presents…” will also be released on DVD with bonus material. Depending on production budgets, the series may feature name talent. Like with “Out of Darkness,’ Prelude2Cinema plans to shoot all around Northeast Ohio.

Prelude2Cinema is working out of Shaker LaunchHouse, a business accelerator in a 23,000 square feet renovated 1950’s car dealership. Michaels says “LaunchHouse is a great place to work since it is open to helping all types of businesses grow. We are raising money for our own studio, but for right now, it is good to be around so many inspiring entrepreneurs.”

Businesses who wish to be involved in “Prelude2Cinema Presents…” can visit the company online at http://www.prelude2cinema.com/webseries.php

Forgot I had a Blog

Yes, it has been some time since I blogged. I promise to rectify that. Still, it is hard to keep the business running and keep up with all the social media responsibilities. Things in production have been slow for some time. I took some time away from the company, saved some money, bought a house and now have settled back into business dealings. So Prelude2Cinema will be launching a new venture this fall that will combine our love of filmmaking and advertising. Some funds are needed but we have a defninite goal in mind and the business plan will be completed soon. Also blogging will happen more and more often.
